James V. Bernadino, C.P.O.James V. Bernadino Orthotist-Prosthetist at VIPO

James is an American Board Certified Orthotist-Prosthetist and VIPO's co-owner and CEO. He received his Bachelors of Science degree in Health Science from St. Mary’s College of California in 1990 and completed his Orthotic-Prosthetics training at California State University Dominguez Hills in 1992.

James has more than 17 years of experience in the field of orthotics and prosthetics, with an intensive background in pediatric care, having worked at the Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital from 1993 to 1995. He is also the Clinical Director of our NCOPE Residency program, a member of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists, and of the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association. James enjoys camping, fishing, and home renovation projects.

Trevor is a native of Bakersfield and as the son of VIPO's founder (now retired) Barry Townsend, he literally "grew up" with the company. Now co-owner and President of VIPO, Trevor graduated from UCLA in 2001 with a B.A. degree in English, and completed his certification in Prosthetics at CSUDH in 2003. Trevor then attended Northwestern University in Chicago, where he received his certificate in Orthotics in 2004.

Trevor completed his residencies at the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center, Orthotic and Prosthetic Center under the tutelage of AOPA President, Walter Racette, C.P.O. He returned to VIPO in August of 2006 as an American Board Certified Orthotist and achieved his American Board Certification in Prosthetics in 2007. He currently sits on prosthetic Advisory Boards for both Ossur and Freedom Innovations.

Trevor enjoys spending time with his wife, two daughters and his son. He finds great fulfillment in helping others.

Michael Nelson, C.P.OMichael Nelson at Valley Institute of Prosthetics and Orthotics Inc.

Michael Nelson, Manager/Practitioner for Newhall location, was born and raised in California. He received his Bachelors Degree in Health Science - Prosthetics Option from California State University Dominguez Hills. He then went to Northwestern University in Chicago for a post graduate program for his Orthotics Certificate. Michael was introduced to Prosthetics and Orthotics while in high school and found that it was the perfect field for his two passions, helping people and building things.

Michael has over 13 years of experience working in the field and has experienced working with advanced prosthetics, pediatrics, stroke patients, and vast variety of other conditions. He is an American Board Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist. He enjoys woodworking, fishing, and spending time with his wife and daughter.

Melissa Garcia, CFomMelissa Garcia

Melissa Garcia joined VIPO's Bakersfield office in 2005 as our Patient Coordinator. Melissa’s natural caring nature has grown into a strong interest in health care and she is now VIPO's American Board Certified Fitter of Orthotic & Mastectomy.

For our post-mastectomy patients, Melissa's goal is to fit each woman with the best products and most natural breast forms and bras possible, to restore comfort and confidence following their breast surgeries. She also fits patients with compression therapy products (for the treatment and prevention of venous disease, deep vein thrombosis, and lymphedema) and all types of bracing and orthotic solutions.

A native of Santa Clarita Valley, Melissa is now happily settled in Bakersfield with her husband Faustino and four dogs.

Nicole Kerr, C.P.O

Nicole Kerr

Nicole is an American Board Certified Orthotist and Prosthetic Resident. She comes to Bakersfield all the way from Brisbane, Australia. She graduated from Missouri Western State University in 2013 with A B.S in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering Technology, and completed her Master of Prosthetics and Orthotics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2014. She completed her Orthotic Residency with VIPO in 2016, and will complete her Prosthetic Residency in 2017.

Nicole became interested in the field of Prosthetics and Orthotics in high school. She enjoys combining patient care with her engineering background, and has a passion for emerging technology. She is also a member of the Australian Orthotic and Prosthetic Association.

Nicole enjoys playing tennis, hiking, and travelling.


Kirby Miller, ABC Certified OrthotistKirby Miller

Kirby Miller, American Board Certified Orthotist has 18+ years of experience in the O+P field. He obtained his BS Chemistry/Biology from Adams State College in 1997. He went on to attend Northwestern University and graduated in 2000 for Orthotics to become certified by the American Board of Certification for Orthotics. He has extensive experience in all areas of orthoses ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics as well as extensive management experience and has served as the residency director and on the coding advisory team for large companies. Kirby brings experience from different regions in the country where he has had proven results with pediatrics, spinal orthotics, scoliosis, and trauma patients. He has also served to manage stock and bill locations and hospital DME services. Kirby has been trained in lower extremity/upper extremity/spinal anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, Orthotic design, materials, gait analysis, and shoe modification. He has extensive experience with stance control and body powered Orthotic systems and has yearly continuing education to remain current on the new and changing technologies within the industry. Kirby has built offices from the ground up for several companies and has received numerous awards within the industry for his patient care, management, and ethical achievements. Kirby is a native of Colorado and in his free time he enjoys spending time with his wife and 4 children fishing, camping, and experiencing the great outdoors of California. He is also an avid sports fan and has played and coached football and wrestling for youth sports. He has also coached basketball for youth with the challenge of developmental abnormalities.


Lesly Garibay, CFtsLesly Garibay

Born in Bakersfield and raised in Mexicali, Mexico. Lesly joined V.I.P.O.'s team in 2016 as a Medical Assistant intern. She found orthotics interesting and exciting so she decided to pursue studies to become an orthotic/shoe fitter. Lesly enjoys interacting daily with patients and strives to give the best patient care. She is now a Certified Therapeutic Shoe Fitter and will become a Certified Orthotic Fitter in 2018.

Lesly enjoys home decorating, shopping and traveling.


Travis Young, ResidentTravis Young

Travis has grown up in the O&P family and has been extremely active since a very young age. Travis' father, Jim, is an amputee who was inspired to become a Prosthetist himself and opened his own Practice, in 2005, with his wife Pam. Travis spent his days after school working alongside his parents and volunteering at multiple O&P events such as the Ga State Amputee Golf Tournament, OPAF First Clinics, and the Extremity Games. As Travis gained more and more interest in the O&P profession, he obtained his Certified Prosthetic Assistant credential through ABC in 2011 and began working his way through school to become a Certified Practitioner.

Travis is a Graduate of West Virginia University and Cal State, Dominguez Hills with his MSOP degree. Travis is currently a member of the Board of Directors for OPAF, the Orthotics and Prosthetics Activities Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that holds entry level activities classes for orthotic and prosthetic users. Travis is currently serving as the Orthotic Resident with Valley Institute of Prosthetics and Orthotics.
